Income Slips (T-Slips)

  • T4: Employment income.

  • T4A: Pension, retirement, annuity, scholarships, bursaries, or RESP.

  • T4A(OAS) / T4A(P): Old Age Security and Canada Pension Plan benefits.

  • T4E: Employment Insurance benefits.

  • T5 / T3 / T5008: Investment income (interest, dividends, mutual funds).

  • T4RSP / T4RIF: RRSP or RIF income.

  • T5007: Workers' compensation or social assistance payments.

  • T4FHSA: First Home Savings Account.

Deductions and Credits

  • RRSP contribution receipts;

  • Childcare expenses (daycare, day camps);

  • Medical expenses (not covered by insurance including dental and private health insurance premiums);

  • Charitable donations and political contribution receipts;

  • Tuition fees (T2202);

  • Interest paid on student loans;

  • Moving expenses;

  • Professional/Union dues;

  • Home office expenses (T2200 form signed by employer);

  • Principal Residence Sale: Address and year of acquisition;

  • Foreign Property: Details if you owned foreign property worth over CAD $100,000;

  • First-time home buyer date of purchase.

Important Notes

  • If filing electronically, keep all related documentation for at least six years in case of CRA audit;

  • Use the CRA’s My Account portal to view and download tax slips.

Income Statements

  • W-2 Forms (for all jobs held during the tax year);

  • 1099-NEC/MISC (For freelance, independent contractor, or gig work);

  • 1099-INT/DIV/B (for interest income, dividends, and brokerage transactions -- stock sales);

  • 1099-G (for unemployment compensation or state/local tax refunds);

  • 1099-R (for retirement plan, pension, or annuity distributions);

  • SSA-1099 (for Social Security benefits);

  • 1099-K: (for income received through third-party payment apps or processors);

  • Cryptocurrency/Digital Asset Records (records of sales, trades, or income from crypto).

Deductions and Tax Credits Documents 

  • Health Insurance (Form 1095-A if you purchased insurance through the Marketplace);

  • Childcare Costs (Name, address, and SSN/EIN of the provider, plus total paid);

  • Education Expenses (Form 1098-T for tuition and receipts for books/materials);

  • Homeowner Records (Form 1098 for mortgage interest, property tax records);

  • Charitable Donations (receipts for cash or non-cash donations);

  • Student Loan Interest (Form 1098-E);

  • Medical Expenses (records of out-of-pocket costs (if itemizing).

Other Important Records

  • Last Year's Tax Return (a copy of last year return for reference -- like checking AGI);

  • Estimated Tax Payments (records of payments made to the IRS -- Form 1040-ES);

  • Foreign Account Details (information on foreign bank accounts if applicable -- FBAR);
